Safety training for older public transport passengers in Salzburg

Older People Travelling
Safety training in Salzburg

[Salzburg, June 2009] The local public transport operator in Salzburg, StadtBus, organised a training course for its older passengers in cooperation with the Centre for Generations and Accessibility (ZGB) on June 23-24, 2009.

Staying mobile means being active and participating fully in life. Growing traffic volumes and new technical infrastructure can be a threat to older citizens who find themselves unable to cope.

The training course showed senior passengers how to use public transport in a safe way. They were able to voice their concerns and were given helpful answers and tips. Many older people have great difficulty getting on and off buses, even low-floor vehicles, and many accidents occur on the buses. Participants in the training course were shown in small groups how to travel safely on public transport.

The course was a highly valuable opportunity for older citizens to learn to travel independently. The training comprised a two-hour session at the bus depot, followed up by a bus ride the next day, and ended with a visit to a pleasant café.
